About Web Sites and Web Pages

  1. Sometimes I can't connect to the News server. Why?
  2. What is the difference between a Web site and a Web page?
  3. What is a Portal?
  4. How can I copy a image from a Web site to my computer?
  5. What is Web Hosting?
  1. The News Server periodically runs a program called "expire" which removes old articles from the news spool. The final phase of the expire program rebuilds the "active file," the file containing the list of newsgroups and articles on the server. To prevent clients from getting an obsolete copy of the active file, the server refuses connections to it, normally five to ten minutes. When the new  active file is built, the server allows connections once again.
  2. A Web Page is a single document containing text, data, information, graphics, sound or hyperlinks.
A Web site is a collection of many Web pages, usually connected by links. A Web site can contain general data, specific and/or detailed information, or be used to transact business.
  3. A Portal is a collection of many different Web sites, which offers different content, activities and hyperlinks.
